LIS (Loodswezen Informatie Systeem) (Pilot Information System)
LIS is an electronic planning system that has been developed together with the Flemish Loodswezen (DABL-Dienst Afzonderlijk Beheer loodswezen). Its goal is to supply a marine pilot to vessels in the Schelde region in as efficient a manner as possible. The planning concerning the piloting of ships and the means to get them to and from the vessels is highly important, as Loodswezen provides a 24 hour service, 365 days a year. This is the pilot service coordination’s main task, together with the traffic service, situated on the Commandoweg in Vlissingen.

To improve the logistics and services provided, bringing in the electronic planning system was a necessity. As well as the technical side of things, however, communications, with an eye on cooperation with the Flemish Loodswezen, has also proved as important. Cooperation can only be optimised with the right methods of communications.

LIS is a dynamic system that will receive continuous and ongoing attention to achieve maximum results.

Schelde Ecdis
This is a quality and safety project that investigates whether a Portable Pilot Unit (PPU) is of value to marine pilots. A PPU is a portable computer that is connected to the Global Positioning System (GPS), amongst other things. It works interactively via electronic nautical maps in order to determine the position of the ship. The investigation determines whether this information is of value in improving the services of Loodswezen in the Schelde region.

It has been shown that the information given by the PPU in the daily activities of pilots, forms part of their knowledge and expertise. With an ever increasing amount of new technology onboard of ships, having ones own interpretation of information has proved to be of value and will work to improve the communications onboard as well as between ships themselves and service providers.
